About Us
El Tono de la Cochinilla is a family company that specializes in hand-wooven, with traditional Zapotec designs. The current members of the company are the 5th generation of master weavers.
Our Rugs
All of the rugs woven at El Tono de la Cochinilla are 100% hand carded, hand-woven, and dyed with 100% natural dyes, and conserve the traditional weaving techniques of colonial Oaxaca.
The Process
The process of making a rug using traditional dying and weaving methods is a long and meticulous one. Weaving in this way however we are able to deliver a superior quality weave to our customers.
We are the 5th Generation of Master Weavers
To us weaving is a very important tradition, that's why from the age of 7 we teach our children how to weave, just like our parents and grandparents taught us when we were children, and how our children will teach their children, and carry on this tradition for future generations.Weaving is not only an art but also a bonding process between family members.
Simple tasks like washing the wool are learned first, and then advance to actually weaving on the foot looms, with progressively more complex designs, util they have mastered all areas of the rug making process and will be able to pass it on to their children.
